October 7 starts a new season of the legendary series. Lifehacker explains what Doctor Who is famous for and why it’s better to start watching.

What is this series about?

Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction series in the world. At the moment, 37 seasons and more than 800 episodes have been released (including all kinds of Christmas issues and the 1996 feature film).

Exciting adventures of the main characters, a talented balance between drama and science fiction, moderate comic plots, creative low-budget special effects, innovative use of electronic music and a well-thought-out concept of the world with its own history and characters - this series is loved all over the world.

Speaking of Doctor Who, we usually mean the last 10 seasons of the franchise. The show of the classic series ended in 1989, and in 2005 the updated Doctor Who returned to the screens. From that moment, the numbering of the seasons was reset to zero, and the plot was built so that it can be watched without even knowing the background.

Who is the Doctor?

The doctor is the lord of time from the planet Gallifrey. The real name of the Doctor is unknown, and the answer to this question itself may jeopardize the existence of the Universe. The doctor is called to save humanity from alien enemies. In the name of this good purpose, he is always ready to sacrifice himself. Being on the verge of death, the Doctor is regenerating, turning into a completely new character with a different appearance, consciousness and character.

Who accompanies the Doctor on his travels?

From season to season, faithful companions help the main character defeat enemies. Most often these are cute young girls, but sometimes there are men, and even robotic dogs. In the classic series, the Doctor was deprived of human instincts, so love lines in the series between him and his companion, as a rule, did not arise. However, after the restart, some girls fell in love with the young-looking reincarnation of the Doctor, and he reciprocated.

What is a TARDIS?

TARDIS - a machine moving in time and space. She knows how to adapt to the environment and take the most inconspicuous form. But the Doctor's TARDIS is broken and always looks like an old British police booth. This is the main transport of the Doctor and his companions and one of the main symbols of the franchise.

And who is the Doctor fighting with?

In his travels, the Doctor constantly encounters various aggressive aliens. But there are also main enemies, the battles with which occur in almost every season.

Enemies of the human race, self-learning and very dangerous. Captured by the idea of destroying everything and everyone.

People enclosed in a metal shell and completely devoid of human emotions. They strive to turn everything living into cybernetic.

In the distant past - the best friend of the Doctor from the planet Gallifrey. In the present - his worst enemy, although sometimes he tries to take the path of correction. The master is another lord of the time who also regenerates while on the verge of death.

Are the series connected?

Bad Wolf - storyline of the first season of Doctor Who

Most often, each series tells about a separate adventure, sometimes 2-3 episodes are combined into a common plot. But, as a rule, within each season there is a common “arch”. Heroes are faced with the mention of a character or phenomenon, and the meaning of this leitmotif opens in the last episodes of the season.

In what order to watch the series?

Viewing is recommended to begin with 10 seasons of the modern Doctor Who in chronological order. Do not forget about the special releases that precede each season. The broadcast of the Christmas series between seasons has already become traditional. Do not ignore additional issues that are related to the plot, reveal the mysteries of previous seasons or precede the first episode of the next.

If you have watched all the episodes of the modern Doctor Who, proceed to the classic series. Try to start with the first season of 1963. If you didn't appreciate the 1960s filmmaking, skip to season 12. By 1974, the picture became color, and the quality improved. The Fourth Doctor, performed by Tom Baker, is considered the best classic Doctor, and the screenwriter for several seasons was Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy novels.

What did the ninth Doctor remember?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: Christopher Eccleston.
  • Satellites: Rosa Tyler, Adam Mitchell, Jack Harkness.
  • Favorite phrase: Fantastic!
  • Season: 1.

A characteristic feature of the ninth Doctor is sentimentality. In the first season, a rare case is demonstrated when the Doctor follows his companion's abilities and allows her to see her dead father. The Ninth Doctor is in no hurry to get involved in the battle himself, preferring to motivate his companions to this, which does not mean his cowardice. The first of the Doctors, whose hair was very short, and laconicism prevailed in style: trousers, a jacket, heavy shoes and no bright accessories.

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: David Tennant.
  • Satellites: Rosa Tyler, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Jack Harkness.
  • Favorite phrase: Molto bene, Allons-y!
  • Season: 2–4.

The Tenth Doctor appears before the viewer as talkative, good-natured, witty and daring, but he becomes more serious when meeting with enemies. Despite the outward carelessness, the Doctor is deeply lonely in his soul. He suffers the thought that his companions will leave him sooner or later. In addition, the charming character began an affair with companion Rosa Tyler.

David Tennat was recognized as the best performer of the role of the Doctor since the time of Tom Baker. He played this role for three seasons, and then starred in several more global specials.

What surprised the eleventh Doctor?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: Matt Smith
  • Satellites: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Clara Oswald.
  • Favorite phrase: Geronimo!
  • Season: 5–7.

With the arrival of the eleventh Doctor, the showrunner changed to a series. The main author of Doctor Who was Stephen Moffat (Sherlock). In the new version, the character is similar to the previous one. He is carefree, talkative, cheerful and cunning. But he added more fun tweaks and childish features. He also takes great care of his appearance: he seeks to look good in front of his enemies, even if the fate of an entire planet hangs in the balance.

As part of the adventures of the Eleventh Doctor, the series celebrated its 50th anniversary. A special episode was released in which the tenth Doctor appeared, the previously unknown reincarnation of the military Doctor (John Hurt), and also mentioned all previous performers of this role.

What distinguished the twelfth Doctor?

  • Performer of the role of the Doctor: Peter Capaldi.
  • Companion: Clara Oswald, Bill Potts.
  • Season: 8–10.

The Twelfth Doctor was in some ways a return to the roots of the franchise. At the time of the eighth season, Peter Capaldi was 55 years old, as was the performer of the role of the first Doctor, William Hartnell, and by his behavior he often copies the third Doctor, played by John Perti. Also in the image of the Twelfth Doctor there are more “alien” features.

The doctor, performed by Peter Capaldi, is focused and single-minded in his fight against enemies. He doesn’t care if those whom he saves consider him a hero. The seriousness of the character is also indicated by the absence of the twelfth Doctor's favorite catchphrase. The last tenth season of his adventures was declared a “soft reset”, starting a new storyline to attract viewers to the screens.

What to expect from the new season?

The eleventh season of Doctor Who brings a lot to the series. The doctor first regenerated into a woman (Jody Whittaker). This was to be expected, since in the previous season the Master Woman was first shown. In addition, the new heroine will have three satellites at once, which happened very rarely in the series.

Also, "Doctor Who" has changed the show runner. Steven Moffat, who has run the show since 2010, has stepped down. Now Chris Chibnell, already working on the scripts of some episodes, is responsible for the production. He is known to the general public on the Broadcast series.
